Preventative Dental Care
Advanced interventions and surgical dental procedures for more complex dental and oral health conditions.
The role of diet in oral health
Diet is one of the most important factors in maintaining good oral health in adults and children. A healthy, balanced diet that’s rich in vitamins, minerals and fresh produce can help to prevent gum disease.
Consuming sugary foods and drinks at mealtimes limits the production of harmful acids that attack tooth enamel and cause decay. Things like chewing gum containing Xylitol, cutting down on snacks and processed foods all help to prevent it.
Talk to your dentist for further advice on how diet can help improve oral health.
Preventative NHS dental care for children
We recommend you bring your children to the dentist with you as early as possible. Regular visits introduce them to what’s involved in a check-up, get them used to the surroundings and instil good oral hygiene habits for life.
All children develop at different rates. Generally, baby teeth usually start to come through at around 6 months and all baby teeth should have grown through by the age of two-and-a-half. Ask our team anything from how to clean your child’s teeth to what brush or toothpaste to use. We’re a very child-friendly practice and all our dental surgeons are experienced in making family visits relaxed and fun.
Oral Hygiene
At your regular check-up we assess your oral health, clean and scale your teeth, and show you the best way to keep your mouth and teeth plaque-free. Thorough brushing for two minutes, twice a day, particularly before bed, helps to prevent tooth decay. Ask your dentist about the best way to brush your teeth for maximum cleaning.
More teeth are lost in the UK through gum disease than through decay. Regular dental check-ups, scaling and polishing will keep gums healthy. Flossing and interdental brushing are also effective at cleaning the areas in between your teeth and around crowns and bridgework. We’ll explain how to do this and talk you through any additional gum treatments such as antibiotic pastes, gels, and antiseptic chips.
Fluoride Treatment
Under NHS dental care, we offer children fluoride treatment application every 6 months. Fluoride treatment strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the possibility of decay. It’s completely safe and quick to apply. Your dentist can paint the treatment on to the surface of the teeth during a routine check-up. Best of all, it comes in different flavours so your child can choose their favourite!
Teeth Protectors
We can create personalised teeth protectors for a variety of purposes including to wear whilst playing sports and to protect against grinding teeth at night. We take a mould of your teeth, which then goes off to a specialist laboratory to be turned into a custom-made mouth-guard or bite-guard just for you.
